Water Storage Question

I just moved into a home w good storage space.
What is the best way to store water?
(I know that this is a basic, much discussed question.)
I used to store water by buying many one-gallon, bottled, pre-sealed, water jugs made of plastic.
I also tried using a 5 gallon "jerry can" but the water seemed to go bad.
Perhaps it is cheapest to buy a 50 gallon barrel, but, has anyone tried this?
Be well.

Re: Water Storage Question

as back up i use large soda bottles you can add clorine or bleach i dont normally, figure i can always boil if needed or add clorine as needed

the 50 gallon would be the better way to go i think for in home storage
you may be able to put it on a stand with a spigot to make getting some
out of it easier.

water in plastic always seems to go "bad"

how long are you going to need this to last?

I don't understand.
How long until? or
How long "if and when"?
Be well.

Re: Water Storage Question

have you thought about a exterior water storage say 500 or a 1000 gallons
poly water tank that could still be moved if need be and could possibly be
rigged to collect rainwater?

Yes.
Websites speak of the need to change the water every 6 months.
But, that seems excessive.

depends what you are starting with water wise. if you use chlorine in the
soda bottles it will likely last for years as you have killed all bacteria in the
bottle but will still tast realy bad because of the plastic taste.

but i assumed this is for emergency use so you may have to deal with that

if everything is shut down how long before you could organise your own
reliable water supply, not how long before somebody turns it back on for you.
unless you have fallout in some above ground source mostly this will
be about the same answer as far as how long.

if your own reliable source is rain you must store enough water to get you through any dry period for me that is about 5 months.

You filled the tank?
Does the water taste OK?
Does it leak?
Do you add chlorine?
Be well.

yes filled the tank
water tasts fine although i would not drink it untill it had matured the sealant
only leaks when it water level gets up real high and is overflowing anyway.
no i do not add chlorine but that is easy to do if i need to keep the water
for a longer period of time.
right now i just cycle the water out and refill on a 2 to 3 week basis
for gardens etc

on the subject of cleaning the water a lady told me that kaolin clay would clean the large boddies of water and
make it better to drink if you just gave it time to settle have not tried it or checked it .
